Watt's Steam Engine Mechanism

This interesting mechanism, frequently called "Watt's Epicyclic Gear Drive", constists of a 30 tooth planetary gear riding externally on a 54-tooth sun gear. The motion of the planet is coupled by a connecting rod to the slider. James Watt had to use this mechanism for his first steam engines as the common principle was blocked by a patent at that time. Study of displacement of the slider is aided by linear and radial scales on the unit.
