Shaping Machine

This interesting model shows the principles of a shaping machine with longitudinal and cross travel. The rotation of a lever on the driving shaft is transmitted via a swinging block linkage to a slider attached with a ram head and generates the longitudinal travel of the planing tool. The angle motion of the swinging block is converted by a Crank and Rocker Drive into rotation of a ratchet wheel which drives a spindle with the carriage. A pencil attached to the ram head draws its cross travels on a writing pad on the carriage. The lenghts of the the travels can be adjusted. By switching over the double pawls of the ratchet wheel a left-right hand motion of the carriage is obtained.
